2 Biggest Secrets to Reset Your Health and Fitness Mindset

“I just don’t have the time to work out, my schedule is way too busy”. “I just don’t have the time to dedicate to working out the way I want.” Can’t seem to fit exercise in? Then you may be going about your approach the wrong way.

Exercise should be treated as something you do for your own well-being, not as something you fit in. We don’t fit in taking a bath or brushing our teeth. These are habits that we’ve established to benefit our overall health. There are tons of blogs that are going to tell you how to change your view on fitness, some of the great advice, and some out of the left field. I’m here to tell you the two biggest secrets when it comes to changing your approach to your health and fitness goals and let me tell you the answer may surprise you! Ready to reset your mindset when it comes to your health and fitness?

Make It A Habit Not A Chore

Abraham Oluwole, owner of AFIT training center.

Are you ready for the first big reveal?! Drumroll, please………EXERCISE! I know, I was shocked as well! All jokes aside, it’s no secret that exercise is an intrinsic part of a healthy lifestyle, but when approached as a burden that needs to fit into your day, it becomes a chore that seldom gets accomplished. Kind of like that load of laundry that needs to be folded sitting in your laundry basket. That said, you should never approach exercise as a chore. On the contrary, exercise should be an established habit like wetting your toothbrush before applying toothpaste (I’m sorry any other routine is simply weird). I spoke to the owner/trainer at AFIT personal training studio in Coral Springs, FL Abraham Oluwole. Oluwole has had a long successful career as a professional natural bodybuilder. Oluwole specializes in weight loss, lean and tone muscle building, and functional training for people over the age of 30. Oluwole has great advice for starting an exercise routine. “Consistency. And accepting failure every now and then. Celebrate the little wins i.e., inches lost, getting a workout in, eating one good meal. The journey is for a lifetime. So be consistent with the new habits.”

Take Responsibility

Joey Bauer, 27 at 465 lbs is down to 268 lbs and counting

“I’m too tired to exercise”, “Between my work and my family I just don’t have the time to make it to the gym”, “The gym is so intimidating”. Despite the well-documented benefits of exercising, only 5% of adults in the U.S. exercise the prescribed 30 minutes a day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An interesting quote, “Ninety-five percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.” ―George Washington Carver. I’m not sure if the numbers adding up are just a coincidence but as they say, “Numbers don’t lie”. Ok confession, the quote says “99%” so the numbers didn’t exactly match up, but you get my point. As no surprise (if you read the title of this paragraph), the second biggest secret to changing your approach to health and fitness is taking responsibility. Joey Bauer, 27, at his heaviest was 465 pounds. “I was always the big guy growing up”, said Bauer. “I was in a 6XL shirt and a size 48 jeans”. Bauer stated that even though he had started exercising, it had always been tough for him to be dedicated to a healthy lifestyle because of his love for food. In July of 2018 Bauer’s friend, Dan introduced him to the ketogenic diet. Bauer took responsibility and made a change to achieve his health and fitness goals. “I needed to finally be dedicated to something and it’s changed not just me as a person, but my whole outlook on life and what I was missing out by being so obese”. As of the time I am writing this, Bauer now weighs 268 pounds, losing a mind-blowing 197 pounds!

Once again, “numbers don’t lie” ……well except for earlier when I changed the quote but that’s unimportant. The moral of this story is not to jump on the keto diet, as I’m sure some of you have taken note to, but to take responsibility and own the fact that only you can make the choice to change your approach to your health and fitness. For Joey, it was taking responsibility for his unhealthy eating habits by finding something that works for him such as the Keto diet. Health and fitness goals are not a one-size-fits-all blueprint and everyone’s individual journey is different. Maybe your diet isn’t the issue. Maybe it’s your sedimentary lifestyle of binge-watching episodes of that show based in the ’80s with the kids and the spooky underworld dimension of demons and secret Russian spies (I’m working on it, don’t judge me) or the 30-45 mins a day you spend scrolling through social media. The bottom line is when you stop making excuses and start taking responsibility for not reaching your health and fitness goals, it is the moment you are much closer to attaining them.

There you go, I’ve given you the two biggest not-so-secret secrets to resetting your mindset in the pursuit of your health and fitness goals.
