Jacky Homme 0:48
Can we, can we talk about a little bit about like the fats, right? Because you know back to he who you will not speak of? Right? Fat isn't a bad thing. But there are also bad fats out there, right? And fats that we should, as much as we could, avoid if it's possible. So, Lex when you're looking at a label of a package of I don't know. I can't even think of anything because I try not to eat anything I can't read the label anymore. But let's say you're looking at something, you know, like, what do you personally like in your day to day, right? Because you don't look like a senior? You know? So if I mean if if you are don't change a thing. But basically, what what is it like? What do you personally like look to avoid? Like, let's say you're traveling or you're on vacation, you just you're not in a position to make like a good whole meal at home? Like what what do you try to avoid? Or what are your kind of I guess, like rules of thumb?
Lex Gallagher 1:56
That's a good question. I mean, on vacation, things are definitely different. But overall a good goal of mine, or I don't really want to say rule. Because moderation is key, right. But overall, I always try to avoid canola oil. And I have for years. And I feel like now it's really been gaining traction online, on Tiktok and Instagram, people are talking about seed oils. And I mean, I know other people believe in it, too. But I've been saying for forever to avoid canola oil. So I'm happy that people are now starting to talk about it more. So I always look at canola oil. Now these processed oils can really affect our inflammation levels, our cholesterol, our heart health. So think about these processed oils, like cottonseed oil. Why would humans want to eat cotton? Right? It comes from cotton, it's not a whole food. So I always look at those seed oils, and they're always going to be in processed foods and most restaurants. So when you're traveling, of course, you're going to be eating in restaurants. So it's difficult to completely avoid. But if you're gonna go to the grocery store and get some snacks, you can at least look at the label and choose a product that has avocado oil or coconut oil instead, and that's always a good option.
Jacky Homme 3:22
Okay, that's good to know. And I've got a question of fact, or myth or or not. If something is vegan, does that automatically mean it's healthy?
Lex Gallagher 3:34
Definitely not. You know, think about, okay, let's see, what's a good example for vegan. I mean, you could eat a giant bowl of pasta, that's vegan, but there's no protein, there's no fiber in there. You're eating white flour pasta, you're gonna be hungry 30 minutes after you eat it and your blood sugar is gonna go right up. So we don't want to look at these labels. Same thing with gluten free. I see these labels at the store about a we'll have a carton of blueberries, gluten free. Of course they're gluten free, they're blueberries. So I really tell people don't look at these keywords because they're just confusing and we want to look at whole foods, vegetables, healthy fats, proteins, fibers, you know, the basic stuff, and it sounds so simple, but that's really all that it is.
Jacky Homme 4:34
Okay, so I mean, I I also am a carnivore, so I eat meat, but you know, I always see the like the I don't want to go against any brands out there. They'll come out but like the impossible burgers, or like you're in a grocery style and in a grocery aisle and it says chicken but it's like C-H-I-C-K like apostrophe N, right? Like, folks who are vegan and are vegetarian and they, you know, don't want to eat consume meat, like, are those I don't want to, like broadly address them. But like, is there something that you've seen in your experience that might be like better alternatives or things that might be, like, you know, soy was in everything for a long time? Like, is there like some tips and tricks or rule of thumbs to also kind of live by? I guess?
Lex Gallagher 5:33
Yeah well, I mean, those foods are definitely highly processed, like you're talking about the chicken with a K and a N. And I see those all the time. And my biggest problem with that is a lot of the plant based proteins like that are made from wheat protein. And I'm not gonna say I wouldn't want anyone to eat wheat or gluten, but I follow a gluten free diet, I think that being gluten free is awesome. It makes me feel way more better when I'm completely gluten free and wheat free. And I find that a lot of my clients have a wheat or gluten sensitivity, even if they don't have celiac disease. It causes bloating, inflammation, IBS like symptoms, and we just want to avoid those. So that's one of the reasons why I don't like those types of products. And of course, they're process. So the shorter the ingredient list, the better, like I already said, so if someone wants to be vegan or vegetarian, that's fine. But I would always recommend less processed foods. So for example, maybe you could make a homemade black bean burger with just five simple ingredients, affordable, cheap like you could pair it with some other great healthy fats, like some avocado and some vegetables. Or maybe I would say an organic tempeh is okay, sometimes a fermented soybean. So I definitely in moderation, but just depends on the person. And then a highlight on lentils and nuts and seeds, things like that. But I really would encourage people to avoid processed foods as much as they can.
Jacky Homme 7:15
Good point. Yeah, I I have nothing to ask after that. That makes a lot of sense, obviously. But sometimes you don't think about it because I have a very dear friend of mine. He's vegan. And he was like, you know, we went somewhere, we ate foods like, ah, you know, it's good for you because it's vegan. I was like hmm I don't know
Lex Gallagher 7:36
Definately not
Jacky Homme 7:37
Does it? It tastes great. It tastes, it doesn't feel that healthy. But
Doc Mok 7:44
And I think I think also a lot of vegan protein sources are not giving you all of the essential amino acids that you need. You have to pair them with other stuff like rice and beans, right? Like, those give you the all the essential amino acids that you need other otherwise, if you just have beans, without the rice, you're not getting all those things, and you may develop some issue long term with the deficiency of that.
Lex Gallagher 8:07
Yeah, exactly. Yeah, combining amino acids are always helpful. There's also a really good amino complex supplement by Thorne. I don't know if you know that one. But that's a nice supplement. Looking at maybe protein powders, I don't know how you feel Doc Mok about protein powders, I'd love to hear your thoughts about it.
Doc Mok 8:27
Yeah, it's very cost prohibitive for a lot of people. So, you know, I think the one really important thing for people to know is that most protein powders have a lot of added sugar. And also a lot of them have chemicals in them. And most of them are whey based. And so if you have issues with dairy or lactose, you will, you most likely will have a problem with that particular protein powder. So there are vegan and vegetarian options, I find it hard to find, like a true higher protein content, usually they'll only get you in the teens. And then it's kind of like we probably can just get it from some other source. So I use a bone broth based protein. It's super clean. It's made by a woman, Amy Myers, MD she's, she's a functional medicine doctor. It tastes like chocolate, it really doesn't have much added sugar to it. And it's very high protein content. It's just a good product. So I think, you know, look at the costs, make those considerations. You know, if you can tolerate lactose go with the whey but just look at make sure that it has minimal chemicals in it.
Lex Gallagher 9:34
Yeah, I completely agree.
Jacky Homme 9:37
That that big old beautiful brain of yours Doc Mok, kiss your brain. Well, folks, I'm looking at the time. We have to take a quick break. And we will be back. We're hanging in with Lex Gallagher and of course Doc Mok, wicked smart and we'll be back in just a moment.
Doc Mok 9:55

Jacky Homme 12:28
All right. All right. All right. I hope you guys missed us because we missed you. Were here it is now Part B or second part. I don't know what the second half of our piece here. But this is where we get into the questions. And I've got some extra questions. But first, we'll go with the basic three that the questions that Lex knew about and then there might be some questions that you didn't know about. We don't know. We'll see. So what is your favorite health book and why?
Lex Gallagher 13:00
I would say my favorite health book right now is The End of Alzheimer's by Dr. Bredesen, just because I work with seniors, cognitive function is always something that's on my mind. No pun intended on my brain. So I just think it's so awesome to learn about how the food that we eat affects your cognitive function and you could really improve your cognition through lifestyle and supplementation. It's just a fantastic book.
Jacky Homme 13:31
Wow. That's cool. That sounds pretty interesting.
Lex Gallagher 13:34
Yeah
Doc Mok 13:34
Yeah.
Jacky Homme 13:36
Okay, okay. I guess we'll go exercise then. Alright. What is your favorite exercise?
Lex Gallagher 13:44
My favorite exercise I would say would be any HIIT workout, high intensity interval training, I'm all about, over COVID I kind of discovered it more because when I was locked at home I couldn't really go to the gym during that period of COVID, I found a bunch of YouTubers that post these HIIT workouts and I just got really into it and I just I still love 'em, I still do them sometimes I don't feel like driving to the gym. So I would say that and it's so good for heart health right?
Jacky Homme 14:15
Yeah.
Doc Mok 14:16
Fun fact Maximal Beings, the first episode where Jacky P was a preview, was a guest, was our episode about gym cleanliness during COVID. So look at him now, he's like running the show here. This is pretty cool.
Jacky Homme 14:32
I've had a little bit of a glow up here on this show. Not gonna lie. But yes, you're amongst peers here. I am a big HIIT person as well. I am not a steady state cardio person. And thank thank the stars that people figured out that HIIT was better. Because like I could not do a treadmill
Doc Mok 14:52
So boring. So boring.
Lex Gallagher 14:54
It's so boring.
Doc Mok 14:55
Yeah.
Jacky Homme 14:57
Okay, and then also your, what is and you might have a good one. So what is the craziest diet that you've heard of or been on yourself?
Lex Gallagher 15:10
Oh, the craziest diet I've ever heard of. Okay, well that's. I have to think about that. I mean, I don't know if this is really crazy, but the strangest thing maybe that I've done is the celery juice cleanse by the Medical Medium, where you drink celery juice every day for 28 days. But it's very specific. I got some head shakes. It's very specific where you can't have
Doc Mok 15:37
You heard this all before too.
Lex Gallagher 15:40
You can't have leftover juice, you have to do a fresh batch every day and just cleaning my juicer every day drove me crazy. I still am a huge fan of celery juice. I love it. I think it tastes great, but I did not get the benefits that they talked about online.
Doc Mok 16:01
You know that celery used to be like one of the most fancy foods you can have. They had dedicated dishes on tables for celery.
Lex Gallagher 16:09
Really?
Doc Mok 16:10
It was it was like a luxury food for people to have was celery and now we use it to like dip in blue cheese when we're having wings at a game you know, no I'm not doing that. But that's what people use it for. It's like a side note like. And celery is so hard to grow like you need so much.
Jacky Homme 16:32
Yeah, Doc I believe your connection like we, you left us on a cliffhanger. You said you need so much. And you froze for 10 seconds but I assume you said water because
Doc Mok 16:43
Water water
Jacky Homme 16:43
We talked about it
Doc Mok 16:46
Yes. The thing we haven't had in Florida very much recent.
Jacky Homme 16:49
Yeah. Wonderful. So yeah, we got to do a Sham or Gram, I'm gonna give you three options. And then you choose one, and while that downloads to my computer, I'm gonna ask you to choose a number. I feel like the riddler right now. A number between one choose a number between 1 and 123. Okay, so I'm gonna give you the choices first. So this is, this one is just called the Westernized Diet, The Whiter the Bread, the Quicker You're Dead. Hello, a little bit of and this one oh, Animal Protein. So which one of those would you like to dissect on our Sham or Gram?
Lex Gallagher 17:34
These are some great options. But I think I'm gonna have to go with the bread one, quicker, you're dead. I have to know. I need to know.
Jacky Homme 17:40
I mean, I honestly, I was hoping, I will not be biased. I was hoping you pick that with me.
Doc Mok 17:47
Me too, me too.
Jacky Homme 17:49
While that downloads, pick a number between 1 and 129.
Lex Gallagher 17:56
I'm gonna have to go with 12
Jacky Homme 17:58
12, oh, any significance behind that number?
Lex Gallagher 18:02
Used to be my dad's basketball number, and then my basketball number, and my brother's basketball number. So like the lucky family number.
Jacky Homme 18:10
That is, that is awesome. You're a big family person. I appreciate that. That's awesome. And then pick 1 through 4
Lex Gallagher 18:18
2.
Jacky Homme 18:19
2, all right, so here's your question as this downloads, if you could have personally witnessed one event in history, what would you have want to have seen
Lex Gallagher 18:32
Wow, okay.
Jacky Homme 18:34
Sorry, I know it's gonna be that heavy of a question, I though is gonna be a little bit simpler, you went that, but that's what you picked, cause you know.
Lex Gallagher 18:41
Uhm, does it have to be nutrition related or anything?
Jacky Homme 18:46
No anything, it could be anything
Lex Gallagher 18:50
Wow this is stunting me I mean, I guess that maybe I'm biased I have to go nutrition, so maybe when the nutrition label was created, I would have liked to be there to see what was the process why didn't they add added sugars right away? I have to know
Doc Mok 19:10
Big sugar was like don't add it. Here's some money
Jacky Homme 19:17
Yeah
Doc Mok 19:17
Here's a million dollars
Jacky Homme 19:19
Pretty much was like yeah, we're gonna do percentages for everything, fat, sodium, everything, but we can't have everything be 1,000% your daily intake of sugar, so we're just gonna go ahead and not put that in the label. Because no one will eat anything.
Lex Gallagher 19:35
What will yours be, I'm curious what yours would be
Jacky Homme 19:38
Me? Oh, man. I don't know
Lex Gallagher 19:40
Both of you
Jacky Homme 19:41
Ah
Doc Mok 19:43
Turning the tables, I dig it. I like it.
Jacky Homme 19:47
Okay, so this is, I think this is just because of Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. And this is not a specific event but I would like to have seen, not the brutality, but like the Colosseum in its like heyday, like, like in those times, I don't want to see like people maiming each other, but just like, packed back in the day like just like historical like, like that old stuff I like I like old stuff. That's I'm in Philly, and everything in Philly is old. So I think that would have been really cool to see.
Doc Mok 20:20
I would like to see when the first airplane took off at Kitty Hawk the Wright Flyer Plane, I think I mean, that must have blown people's mind like humans are flying like what so
Jacky Homme 20:32
Like holy moly donut shop that dude's in the air. All right
Lex Gallagher 20:37
That's a great answer.
Doc Mok 20:38
Yeah.
Jacky Homme 20:40
Also appreciate you putting
Doc Mok 20:41
Yeah
Jacky Homme 20:42
Hit us with a UNO reverse card, I like that
Doc Mok 20:45

Jacky Homme 22:35
All right, so
Doc Mok 22:36
Oh, man, this is morbid.
Jacky Homme 22:38
Yeah. Have you seen the toe?
Doc Mok 22:40
Yeah, there's there's a foot with a toe tag on it, as the opening sequence, their leading dark so well let's see where there's goes.
Jacky Homme 22:48
And it says the quicker you're dead. Actually, I'm gonna have to do a reshare because I'm gonna find it appropriately with the sharing the audio. There it is. All right. Here we go.
Clip 1 22:59
When you eat the fruit, you should eat the seed. There's a tribe of folks in Northern Pakistan called the Hunza. The Hunza people never get cancer. When the tribe was first discovered their average age was 160. The Hunza people's favorite foods to eat is apricot seeds. They take the apricot seeds and squeeze them and get oil out of them. They put the oil on their skin and the women don't wrinkle. They're really good looking at 70 and 80 Jason Valle teaches, he said cancer cannot survive in a body of the person that consumes apricot seeds. You know bread used to strengthen your heart. They learned years ago if they take out the vitamin E, the lecithin, and the omega three fatty acids, they take them out of the wheat, make the bread with white flour, the bread lasts for months. But the people started dying of heart attacks and strokes and circulation problems. See a simple formula: the white the bread, the quicker you're dead.
Doc Mok 23:48
I like the music. It sounded like new new 80s feel. You know like
Jacky Homme 23:57
That is, that is the official soundtrack of like conspiracy theory videos online
Doc Mok 24:02
I heard that in soundtrack before.
Lex Gallagher 24:06
Yeah it's very common.
Jacky Homme 24:07
As as the lay man, I'm gonna take my first crack at it then I'll let the wicked smart people on the call. I don't know about the beginning part stuff. I don't know anything about those folks that he talked about. But I do know yes, the white bread is not good for you from what I've learned.
Doc Mok 24:19
Yes.
Jacky Homme 24:20
So that's all I've got. Back to you folks.
Doc Mok 24:35
Sorry Wonderbread.
Jacky Homme 24:38
Yeah, yeah, sorry Wonderbread. Definitely not.
Doc Mok 24:43
The oldest person was not 160 years old. No way.
Lex Gallagher 24:49
I was thinking that too.
Doc Mok 24:50
Prove it to me.
Jacky Homme 24:52
I have to search the Hunza people and apricot oil.
Doc Mok 24:56
Yeah. I mean, I think that you eating most of the fruit like we talked about earlier, the kiwi is a good thing. Right? But not for everybody. And that's not the secret to longevity? Definitely not.
Lex Gallagher 25:10
Yeah.
Doc Mok 25:11
The oldest person, whoever lived that's documented, I guess we don't formally know, like people where they couldn't determine when they're born because it was too long ago, but it's 122 years old. And the oldest living person is 116 years old right now. So.
Jacky Homme 25:28
Yeah. And also, I would say, I'm doing like a quick Google search. But also, I would say, it's tough to say no one never had cancer. If it's like, people who aren't actively testing for cancer, like I feel like theres.
Doc Mok 25:42
Right, people that die early or people that don't have access to CAT scanners or medical care, like you just don't know what you don't know, you know? .
Jacky Homme 25:49
Yeah.
Lex Gallagher 25:50
Exactly.
Jacky Homme 25:51
So I mean, I don't know, are we shaming this? Are we gramming this? Are we in the middle? I put this like.
Doc Mok 25:56
Is white bread bad for you Lex. I mean, like, and why, why?
Lex Gallagher 26:01
Yeah, I mean, I would say white bread is not good for us. However, if you eat a slice, I promise you will not drop dead, right after. So.
Jacky Homme 26:12
Yes.
Lex Gallagher 26:13
I think it, it's, again, the moderation if you're eating a sandwich, once in a blue moon, you're not gonna get heart disease. But if you're eating an aggressive amount of refined carbohydrates, like these white flour products, then it can affect your health long term. But I wouldn't say so severely, like the video is saying, and there's so many other factors to it, right? I mean, you could eat all the apricot seeds you want. But if you're eating, I don't know no vegetables at all, or no healthy fats or no proteins. Are those apricot seeds going to help you? So that's just my thought.
Jacky Homme 26:52
And also to like, cold cuts are not that great for you. So you probably should be also be watching what you put in between the bread. I think that's also important.
Lex Gallagher 27:01
Exactly, exactly.
Jacky Homme 27:03
You know.
Lex Gallagher 27:04
people tend to skip the vegetables too, because you can only fit so much vegetable on a little sandwich. And it happens all the time. They forget about the veggies.
Doc Mok 27:13
Yeah. I don't know who said I guess maybe it's the Earl of Sandwich who was like eat my sandwich named after me. Everybody just did it for hundreds of years. And now here we are.
Jacky Homme 27:24
Yeah.
Lex Gallagher 27:24
Yeah.
Doc Mok 27:25
Earl of sandwich and Ancel Keys got a bunch of jerks.
Jacky Homme 27:28
Just yeah, whack. They're all whack. So but it's apricot seed oil a thing have the both of you have you come across apricot seed oil? is like this.
Doc Mok 27:40
Nope.
Jacky Homme 27:40
Is, is the cancer hiding in the secret?
Lex Gallagher 27:43
I Okay, I have not heard of apricot seed oil. But I have heard of apricot seeds. I actually have this professor in my graduate program, he was all about them. And he talked about I forgot, is it vitamin B17? Or what is that what it is or B9 something like that? And we did a little bit of searching on it. And it's super interesting. But there's also a lot of research out there saying that it could be bad for you. Is that true? I don't know. It's just conflicting information that I'm not really sure what to trust to be honest.
Doc Mok 28:19
It is vitamin B17. Well done.
Lex Gallagher 28:23
Okay, thank you.
Doc Mok 28:24
It's almost like you're an expert in nutrition ot something.
Jacky Homme 28:27
It's kind of like you went to school and learn this stuff or something.
Doc Mok 28:30
Yeah.
Lex Gallagher 28:31
I'm pretty proud of myself. I haven't talked about that in very long time
Doc Mok 28:36
Weird.
Lex Gallagher 28:35
So I don't know where that number came from.
Doc Mok 28:37
That's awesome. It's badass.
Jacky Homme 28:38
Yeah.
Lex Gallagher 28:39
Thank you.
Doc Mok 28:39
You should have done that video.
Jacky Homme 28:41
Yeah
Doc Mok 28:41
It would have been better.
Lex Gallagher 28:44
I'll try.
Jacky Homme 28:46
I'm gonna go ahead and say it that it's Sham
Doc Mok 28:48
It's a sham again.
Jacky Homme 28:49
There's not enough conclusive evidence.
Doc Mok 28:51
Yeah.
Jacky Homme 28:52
Experts on the call. Can't find anything to agree with. It's a sham.
Doc Mok 28:56
Right. That's right.
Jacky Homme 28:56
Listen, folks. Be be just cautious and be suspicious of online videos with that, especially with music that doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo.
Doc Mok 28:57
Amazing.
Jacky Homme 28:58
It's good information. Yeah, go ahead sorry about that.
Maybe it's the lead clip. Maybe the lead pictures that toe tag like maybe you don't need that in your day
Lex Gallagher 29:17
Yeah
Doc Mok 29:17
Maybe you just watch like some puppies playing instead just throwing it out there.
Lex Gallagher 29:21
I also agree.
Jacky Homme 29:21
And also and also good information doesn't need to be entertaining. So if there's music and all this cross coding and stuff you know just no so Sham I wish we had like a stamp of big rubber stamp it just boom Sham. So all right, well, I'm out of things. I've out questions.
